Helmet on the Floor

I posted this image on an Italian facebook group for motorcyclists a while ago, it got a lot of likes, it’s my bike in front of a popular destination: the fantastic Castelluccio di Norcia. This is a wide open plain up in the Sibillini mountains where the fields sprout incredible colours in June as the lentil crops come to flower, it’s quite the spectacle!

But in the comments I was also reminded of the seriousness of a certain code / signal that’s used here in Italy: the placing of a helmet on the ground. Aside from being generally regarded as bad luck, it’s used to signal a need for help!

So remember, when you stop out on the roadside, put your helmets on your bikes somewhere if you aren’t carrying them with you. If you put them down like I did here you might have lots of concerned bikers stopping by.

I have no idea how far this convention travels, is it used in other countries you’re aware of??
